The
village of Bonchida (Bontida) in the county of Kolozs (Cluj) lies on the western portion
of Mezôség (Transylvanian Heath). It lies on the Kis-Szamos river approximately 30km
northwest of Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca). The population of the town is comparable to others
of the area: Romanian 57%, Hungarian 26% and Gypsy 17%. In this multi-ethnic environment, two dances cycles evolved: one Hungarian and the other Romanian. The traditional Hungarian dance cycles final years were in the late 1930's, while the Romanian one lived on for another 20 years. |
